Colonial Pastors in Public Affairs - Rev. John Wise P3

Kandice Nuzum

The last 2 weeks I have been talking about the Rev. John Wise, his intellect and deep Biblical knowledge, strong spiritual prayer life, physical prowess, his influence in the War of Independence and sermons just as powerful as his prayer life and these sermons interestingly being very similar thoughts in the Declaration of Independence.

There is a good reason for the striking similarity between the language of the Declaration and that used generations earlier by the Rev. Wise. In 1772, with the American War of Independence looming on the horizon, leading patriots from Massachusetts reprinted two of Wise’s works to remind their fellow citizens of the core Biblical principles of government.

The list of patriots who helped republish Wise’s ideas is impressive.

It includes several distinguished names such as:

. Political leaders Timothy Pickering (US secretary of state and US secretary of war), Moses Gill (governor of Massachusetts), and Samuel Elliot (Massachusetts judge)

. Military leaders Artemas Ward and Jedediah Huntington (generals during the War for Independence), and Joshua Loring (naval officer)
