Princeton (College of New Jersey), 1746. One of its early presidents was a signer of the Declaration, John Witherspoon, and his educational philosophy was clear: “Cursed be all that learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ.” Some famous early graduates included signer of the Declaration Benjamin Rush; signers of the Constitution James Madison, William Paterson, and Jonathan Dayton; and Constitutional Convention delegate William Houston (who later returned to Princeton as a professor).
