In 1693, the establishment of the College of William and Mary revived Henricus’ original objective of teaching children of both colonists and Indians. Founded through the efforts of the Rev. James Blair, William and Mary was started so that “the Church of Virginia may be furnished with a seminary of ministers of the Gospel, and that the Christian faith may be propagated among the western Indians to the glory of Almighty God.” Several signers of the Declaration of Independence attended this school, including Thomas Jefferson, George Wythe, Benjamin Harrison, and Carter Braxton.
