John Smith & Pocahontas P8
Kandice Nuzum
The Jamestown Colony survived and grew, which might not have occurred without Pocahontas’ help in the early critical years.
In 1610, Governor Thomas Gates issued a series of laws urging colonists to live according to God’s commands, and subsequent governors expanded the laws. In 1619, governmental elections took place in Jamestown, and the result was the first elected representative body of the New World. They open with prayer, and then met in the choir loft of the church. Civic leaders also encouraged the colonists to open their homes to Indian youth to teach the Bible.
