John Smith & Pocahontas P6

Kandice Nuzum

After the Jamestown leader contacted the local chief and demanded that he bring Pocohontas to him, that local chief complied with the captain’s request, delivered Pocahontas, and was compensated for his betrayal for her. When Powhatan learned of Pocahontas’ capture, negotiations began between the two sides.

Over the following year, Pocahontas lived both at Jamestown and the nearby settlement of Henrico. She was entrusted to the care and supervision of the Reverend Alexander Whitaker, who helped her learn English by reading the Bible with her. As a resuld of her studies, Pocahontas converted to Christianity. In 1614, with the blessing of her father, she married John Rolfe, a prominent Christian planter.
