John Smith & Pocahontas P5
Kandice Nuzum
In 1609, a gunpowder explosion injured Governor John Smith and he went back to England for treatment. After his departure, relations with the Indians deteriorated.
On multiple occasions the Indians generously provided food to help the colonists survive, but the Jamestown settlers proved to be ungrateful for the lifesaving help they received. They began to believe the Indians owed them, so they demanded more and more. When Powhatan, Pocahontas's father, refused, the colonists attacked and burned native villages, threatening further violence if their demands went unmet. Chief Powhatan and Pocahontas severed contact with the settlers.
