Providence of Almighty God in US History P8
More on our trip through History, the Superintending Providence of God and Columbus.
I am not trying to say that Columbus is a perfect man. However, the modern claims that he was a heartless genocidal maniac are false. In fact, Columbus not only admired the good qualities of the Taino natives but, as governor of the new land, he openly protected them. And when he found the newly arrived Spanish colonists mistreating, cheating, and enslaving the Taino's, he punished those settlers. In response, the colonists revolted and imprisoned Columbus, accusing him of the crimes they themselves had committed, sending him back to Spain in chains.
Columbus was tried in court, and when they presented the evidence and exposed the false claims the court fully exonerated him. Nevertheless, Columbus’ critics today often recite the false charges against him as undisputed facts, failing to point out that he was found innocent of every accusation.
