Providence of Almighty God in US History P6
More on our trip through History, the Superintending Providence of God and Columbus.
Last week we heard that Columbus set out for the Carib lands of those who had attacked and killed his men, their Taino friends and had taken their women. Later, in one Carib village, Columbus found huts where the Caribs housed enslaved Taino women, whom the Caribs raped to produce children which they ate. They only kept the children of their native wives. Columbus liberated the enslaved women they found in the huts and proceeded to fight the Caribs whenever they engaged him… Sadly, not every European explorer followed Columbus’ example of kindness; indeed, his own crew later took up arms against him to prevent his caring treatment of the natives.
Despite Columbus’ approach to native peoples, which was certainly among the most humane of any explorer at that time, many authors today assert that he sought to destroy and pillage all Indians. This is simply bad history.
