The recorded story of America begins with the “discovery of the New World in the late 15th century of Christopher Columbus. Even though the Vikings had landed in America hundreds of years earlier, it was the announcement of Columbus’s arrival in 1492 that opened the Western Hemisphere to European colonization.

Columbus was born in Italy around 1451. He developed a love for the seas early in life, becoming one of the most proficient talented navigators of his era. An avid student of the Bible, Columbus came to believe it was possible to sail across the Atalntic to reach people in Asia who had never heard of the God Who is “the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas.” (Columbus specifically quotes this phrase from Psalms 65:5 as one of the many Bible passages that inspired him in his historic undertaking.)
