Providence of Almighty God in US History P7
More on our trip through History, the Superintending Providence of God and Columbus.
For the past several week I have been sharing about Columbus interactions with the peaceful Taino tribes and the canabalistic Caribs. Another part of the modern narrative about Columbus is that he enslaved peaceful natives and carried them back to Spain. But once again the full story is not being told. Nearly all those he forcibly brought to Spain were the cannibalistic Caribs or those captured in justified warfare. From the friendly Taino tribes, several volunteered to travel back to Spain with him, including an important local chieftain and his family. One of the peaceful natives who chose to return with Columbus actually became a member of the royal Spanish court; another took Columbus’ last name and faithfully traveled with him as his interpreter for his various visits to other native tribes and islands.
